I recently received an email from Appetite For Education, an online publisher of eBooks and mobile apps for children, informing me of a new app they’ve created.
Their new app is called BabyWorld. It offers a unique way to support a baby’s development from birth to 12 months.
For the first few months of a babies life their vision is blurry. They are unable to see shades or colours and instead only see high contrasts (like black & white).
It can take up to a year for a babies sight to fully develop so they can see things in more detail or distinguish between different colours.
This app has been designed to aid the development of a babies sight.
BabyWorld app features?
There are three main features of the app which are:
- Black & white flashcards that have different illustrations on them allowing a parent to tell their baby about the strange world around them
- There are also a number of colour flashcards contaning the colours a baby will first see
- Soothing baby music in the background
- A filter that allows a parent to see the world through the eyes of a baby – this is the feature I like the most!
As shown in the illustration above, babies can see the flashcard with an apple on it much clearer than the other image.
Showing the different flashcards to your baby and simply telling them what the object is will support their development during the first 12 months of their life.
It’s a really simple feature but very effective. I already have 2 daughters and we are expecting a 3rd to arrive in July 2017, so I’ll definitely be putting this app to good use!
An example of one of the colour flashcards:
I’ve had a little play with this feature and it’s rather fun! It’s really interesting to see the world through a babies eyes.
This feature uses your phones camera to shown the world around you as your baby would see it.
This is how our newborn will see her daddy at 1 day old:
Pretty scary right!? This is how babies see the world at 6 months old:
Much clearer and some colours have started to filter through.
The little button in the bottom left of the screen is a VR (Virtual Reality) setting. This completely engulfs you into a babies world which is very exciting and strange!
