It’s no secret that once you become a parent, your life changes forever. You simply don’t see things in the same way you once did, and your child is – and will always be – your main priority. However, you have to take care of yourself to be able to take care of your child. As a result, you should ensure that you find the time to practice self-care.
Every one, though men, in particular, find it hard to develop a self-care ritual, as they feel as though self-care is selfish. This is not true.
Here’s how you can make self-care part of your schedule, even as a busy parent!
1. Don’t be afraid to reach out
One of the most important aspects of self-care is being able to talk about how you are feeling. Though talking about complex emotions, such as anxiety can be daunting, it is an important part of the recovery process. You cannot ignore these feelings and hope they will go away.
Talking about how you are feeling can be especially difficult for men, as society teaches them that showing emotion is a sign of weakness. This is not true. It is a sign of strength. So, set aside some time each day to talk to a friend or family member. Get anything that is bothering off your chest sooner rather than later. Even just five minutes of conversation can help!
2. Make use of all resources
There are plenty of resources available to you to help make self-care easier. Therefore, you should pay close attention to your body and mind and ensure you are giving yourself exactly what you need.
For example, if you are suffering from heightened anxiety, you may benefit from being able to learn about CBD oil. CBD oil has a range of properties and can be used to help those who suffer from anxiety, depression and related disorders. Furthermore, it can also help deal with any skincare issues – pampering yourself is another great example of self-care!
3. Understand that self-care comes in many forms
More often than not, people don’t feel as though they have the time to incorporate self-care into their schedule, especially as a parent. However, you have to understand that self-care comes in many forms – and not all of them are time-consuming. Here are some great examples!
- Having some time for yourself. Even just 10 minutes alone can help you process your emotions and clear your head.
- Spending time with your loved ones. If you can’t meet in person right now, organise a phone or video call. You can also spend time playing with your little one!
- Listening to your favourite song. Maybe even singing along.
- Preparing a delicious meal. Or treating yourself to an indulgent snack.
- Going for a walk – preferably somewhere where you are surrounded by nature.
- Making your bed. This is a great thing to do first thing in the morning.
- Telling a joke. Even a bad one.
- Reading a book. Or re-reading an old favourite!
- Watching a film or TV series.
