How to Keep Your Kids and Belongings Safe When Moving House

Moving house is difficult and stressful for anyone. As well as all the paperwork involved, whether you’re buying or selling, you also need to organize the move itself and get everything sorted for the moving date. Things can get even more complicated if you’re moving long distances and you can’t fit everything in one load.

But what about when you have a family? Keeping your children safe is yet another concern parents face when moving house. But if you plan in advance, you’ll be able to dial down the stress and safety issues that your kids might face, as well as reduce the risk of your stuff being damaged or lost.

Involve Your Kids

If possible, you can make things easier for your whole family by involving your children in the house move. Talk to them about the move and what it will mean for them. If they have any concerns, let them talk about them, even if the house move is going to happen anyway, and see how you can alleviate their problems.

You can also get them to pitch it, especially if they’re old enough to do so. They can help you with packing in advance and, if it’s appropriate, involve them in the house search. Ask about their wants and preferences, especially if you have some wiggle room.

Hire Professional Movers

One of the best ways to massively dial down your stress is to hire professional movers to do the bulk of the lifting, transporting, and moving. They have the skills, the tools, and the vehicles for the job.

While you can hire a van and get your friends involved, professional movers will be able to do it more quickly and safely. But you can still ask family and friends to help you unpack.

Pet and Babysitters

If your children are younger and you have pets, one concern might be that they’ll get very stressed during the house move and, worse, they might get underfoot and risk getting hurt. The best option is to put them out of the way and somewhere they can be relaxed and happy.

This is a great opportunity to visit grandparents or other family members. It’s a nice way for them to help without having to do any heavy lifting. Otherwise, you can hire someone to look after your kids and/or any pets.

Using Self Storage

A common problem when moving long distances is that multiple trips can be a nightmare. Or, even worse, you might have to live in temporary accommodation before you can move into your new home.Thankfully, there is a solution to both of these issues. Self storage from Britannia Beckwith allows you to store your belongings, either ahead of time to cut the transit in half for some of your stuff, or as you move, so it’s safe when you can’t use it. You can also use it when you’re downsizing but need more time to sell excess furniture.
