With disrupted routines in this pandemic period and increased screen times, it has become harder to take care of your eyes. Lack of nutrition and prevalent optical defects have made our eyes vulnerable to loss of vision at a very early age. So much so that today, even kids as young as three years old can be seen wearing glasses or frames to correct optical defects.
1. Eat nutritious food
Lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, lycopene, omega-3, and vitamins A, C, and E are essential to maintain healthy vision for long years. Some foods like orange, carrot, blueberry, leafy vegetables, bell peppers, legumes, and nuts are rich sources of antioxidants and essential nutrients for eyes.
2. Maintain hygiene
Make a habit of washing your eyes with normal to cold water at least twice a day and also after long outdoor hours. Putting a slight amount of honey like a collyrium on the waterline before sleep is an incredible hack to pull out all dust particles and soothe the eyes. If you use non-prescription glasses with a blue light coating, clean them regularly with an antibacterial lens cleaning solution.
3. Use the right make-up
Always choose a toxin-free make-up for your eyes. Also, don’t forget to remove it with the help of a makeup remover at the end of the day as residual makeup acts as breeding grounds for bacterial colonies.
4. Quit smoking
Multiple studies reveal that smoking tends to alter the structure of the cells of the retina and gradually result in cataracts. It is also associated with several other diseases like macular degeneration, retinal damage, Dry Eye Syndrome, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, colourlessness, glare sensitivity, etc.
5. Avoid UV damage
Exposure to UV rays makes you more prone to photokeratitis, cornea sunburn and age-related macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses not only adds a fashion statement to your personality but also provides you with a protective shield against the harmful ultraviolet rays.
6. Take a break from the screens
Prolonged screen hours expose you to high-intensity blue light that causes several disorders and syndromes like Digital Eye Strain and insomnia. Look away from your screen every 20 minutes and blink as often as you can.
7. Wear blue light glasses
Blue light blocking glasses are the latest technology in optical study that are able to block a significant amount of blue waves coming from different screens or the sun. You can ask your optician to add an anti-blue light coating to your prescription or fake glasses.
8. Be aware of your family medical history
Some eye diseases can be inherited. So, you need to check your family’s medical history to find out if any of your family members have or had eye disease or disorder. It’s essential to be aware of your risk factors so you can identify conditions at an earlier stage and lookup for treatments.
9. Get enough sleep
Just like other parts of your body and brain, your eyes need rest too. Don’t miss to take a sufficiently long nap each day to help your eyes recharge and refreshen.
