Kitchen Design – The Difference Between Style Trends & Practicality

Kitchen design is a tough field. There are a million and one factors to consider, from budget to your style preference. It can be difficult to find a perfect balance between what you want and what you can afford. A lot of people go for the most stylish-looking designs they can find but is it the most practical?

We’ve gathered some of the best kitchen design trends and talked about how practical they are for your bottom line. Let’s get to it!

Smart Appliances

The evolution from the microwave to the smart microwave really shows how appliances have been evolving with time. Some smart appliances may seem a little gimmicky, like the boiling water tap, which, whilst it may save you the space taken by a kettle, will cost more to run and maintain. However, the smart fridge will help you save time by updating your shopping and will ensure that you don’t run out of essential items.

Kitchen Tiles

Tiles are an excellent way to add style and personality to your kitchen. There are, of course, the practical benefits, such as being easy to clean and heat resistant, but they can also be an important part of your design. Tile patterns come in all shapes and colours, and you can even get custom designs made if you want something more specific. For a long-lasting look that will add value to your home, tile is a great choice. However, the high price tag attached might make this more suitable for those who have a generous budget.

Custom Cabinets

Of course, there are plenty of pre-made kitchen cabinets to choose from! However, it is worth exploring whether custom cabinets are offered by kitchen design services as they will add that special touch that you really want in your home. Because of the ability to customise nearly every aspect of these, many people opt for them in their kitchen remodelling project.

There are some things to consider:

  • The price tag
  • The amount of time it will take for your order to be complete
  • How long you will be on the property

Eye Level Appliances

It is a common feature in most kitchens that the counter and the appliances are at eye level (i.e., stove, microwave, etc.). However, this idea is becoming more and more outdated as we move into modern times. It was a way to save space in the past, but now there are more innovations – for example :

  • Sliding or pull-down racks to store dishes or appliances underneath.
  • Drawers/cabinets that pull out.
  • Floating islands. These can be a niche of their own as they are large, modern and cost a lot more than regular islands. The benefit is that they can be used for more than just food preparation.

More Drawers, Fewer Cabinets

Deep drawers are a popular trend, and it’s easy to see why. They offer a better way to provide storage than some cabinet designs and can be fitted with all kinds of racks and systems to accommodate whatever will be stored in them.  Cabinets are also being reduced to the minimum in modern kitchens. The emphasis is on clean lines and modularity, with kitchen designs that are easy to move around or change with one another.

The main purpose of the kitchen is food preparation and cooking, but the kitchen is also the heart of any house, so do not be fooled by the ‘modern’ look – if you don’t think it will work practically, it won’t provide what you are looking for.
