Pergolas: Should You Buy or Just DIY?

If you’ve ever seen someone’s pergola sitting in their backyard, you may have thought it looked nice. You might have thought about what it would be like to get one of your own. You may even have gone so far as to price some pergolas to see how realistic getting one is.

You can easily purchase a 12 x 16 pergola for yard events like block parties, cookouts, birthday parties, etc. Before you do, though, you should determine whether you’ll want to buy a pergola kit and set it up yourself as a DIY project or whether you should hire someone to do the installation for you.

Do You Have Some DIY Skills?

When considering whether you should hire someone to install your pergola or whether you can build it yourself from a kit, the first thing you should probably think about is whether you have some DIY skills. Have you done anything like this in the past? Have you put a bed together, or a shelf, or any other kind of furniture?

If you have, and if you’re good at it, then that’s a point in favor of making this a DIY project. If you know that you’re deficient with DIY projects, though, you may feel like hiring someone makes more sense.

How Much Money Do You Have?

How much money you have available at the moment is also going to play a part in this decision. If you have plenty of cash on hand, then you’ll likely think nothing of hiring someone handy who can install your pergola.

If you have very little money, though, you may want to save by getting a kit that you can install yourself. You can save cash on the installation if you handle that on your own. These kits come with instructions, and in theory, all you have to do is follow them.

Do You Tend to Get Frustrated During Home Improvement Projects?

You should also think about any home improvement or DIY projects you have done in the past. Have you ever handled anything this ambitious before? If you’ve ever tackled a project of this nature, how did it go? Did it go smoothly, or did you get frustrated at some point?

If previous DIY projects were a disaster, and if you ended up injuring yourself, then it’s probably best if you hire someone to install your pergola. You can absolutely save money if you do it yourself, but it might be worth it to you to avoid the hassle and potential injuries if you call in a professional to handle this task for you.

There are compelling reasons for both installing your pergola yourself and hiring someone to do it. Neither is necessarily a superior option.

Doing it yourself makes sense for people who like working with their hands and saving some money. Bringing in some outside help is the better choice if you know you dislike DIY projects and have enough cash to pay someone to do the job.
