Keep Yourself and Your Kids on a Schedule

We all know how much joy kids can bring into our lives. However, having kids can also make it hard to stay organised. So, to stay on top of everything, keep these useful tips in mind.

Identify your chores

In order to stay on schedule, it’s important to be aware of all your chores. So, write down things that you have to do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Sometimes we don’t even notice how many things we actually have to do, so putting them all on paper can be of tremendous help.

Create a schedule

Once you have all the tasks in mind, it’ll be much easier to organise everything. Now, the way you choose to approach this depends completely on your preferences. For example, you can use a typical planner or turn to your smartphone, or even combine them. On the other hand, you can also make a big spreadsheet or hang a big calendar in your kitchen so that everyone has access to the schedule at any time. Colour-coding your schedule can be quite useful as well, as then each family member will have a designated colour and understanding the timetable will be much easier.

Revise the schedule

Having a schedule is great but you still have to keep it loose as there are always some things you can’t plan for. For example, you can set the time for dinner. That means that dinner will be at the same time every day and you can plan the rest around it. Furthermore, you should also re-visit the schedule on a weekly basis. Maybe an approach you took last week won’t work this time, so add the new obligations to the list and shuffle the rest a bit.

Work with your spouse

Unless you are a single parent, being able to rely on your partner is crucial. When planning your week, make sure they are in the know. Discuss all the upcoming events and tasks, so that you know who has time for what. See whether one of you is able to cover for the other in case something else pops up. Working as a team will definitely make everything easier.

Include your kids

If your kids are a bit older, you can consider including them as well. If you’re cleaning the house, there are plenty of things they can help out with. For example, they can be in charge of making their bed, putting away their toys and generally tidying up their room. Moreover, they can fold towels or put away various other things like books or silverware. Seeing as how a lot of kids think chores are fun and actually want to help around, you can teach them how to stay organised.

Plan downtime

On the other hand, if your kids are still too young to help you out, plan for them to take a nap so that you can do everything you have to do in peace. If they are well behaved, you can leave them in their room with some mobile toys from Mother’s Choice while you take care of the laundry or dishes. Try to set a daily routine by doing it at the same time as then the kids will get used to it and it’ll be easier to calm them down.

Clean up immediately

To avoid creating too much mess, you should deal with one task at a time. For instance, you should clean up after every meal so that the dishes will not pile up. Finish straightening one room before moving to another. By setting these smaller objectives, everything will seem much easier.

Use the night before to prepare

Mornings are often hectic, so a great hack is preparing everything, or as much as you can, the night before. For example, you can let the kids choose the clothes they are going to wear and lay them out. You can prepare their lunch boxes or even breakfast – that way, you’ll have more time in the morning. Furthermore, know where everything school-related is so that you don’t have to look for any essentials right before you leave.

Be aware of your energy levels

It’s important to know when you function best. Is it in the morning or afternoon? Do you manage to do most of the work in the evening? Do you also need a quick nap to regain energy? Keep all of this in mind when planning your day. Knowing your energy levels will allow you to do everything efficiently.

Take care of yourself

No matter what happens, do your best to remain calm and collected. Staying on schedule can be quite stressful, so remember to take care of yourself. Get enough sleep. Make sure you eat healthy foods and stay hydrated. Try to incorporate some exercise into your daily routine. Take a relaxing bath every once in a while. Read an interesting book.

Having a schedule is crucial for keeping up with everything but remember that you can still take some freedoms to make the most of your days with your kids. Don’t overwork yourself and enjoy making new memories – the rest will fall into place.
