I have to be completely honest, over the last 3 years, I’ve let me overall health slip a little … okay, quite a bit! About 3 years ago, I was in the shape of my life, running half marathons and going to the gym several times a week. As COVID hit, I found myself eating unhealthy foods and not exercising as much which is a bad combination!
A few months back, I decided enough was enough and I embarked on a journey to improve my overall health so I could get back to running half marathons. My ultimate goal is to eventually tackle a full marathon, something which I haven’t managed to achieve yet.
In order to get back in shape, I was going to need some support and for me that came from my iPhone 12! You may be thinking that phones and improving your health aren’t a great match but I’m going to show you how my phone has enabled me to embark on that journey.
With everything at our fingertips nowadays, you don’t have to look far to find a massive range of mobile apps that are designed to support people on their wellness journey. I’m going to take you through the apps I am frequently using on my iPhone 12.
Nutrition – MyFitnessPal
One of the biggest changes I’ve made to my lifestyle over the last few months is my diet. I’ve been keeping track of my calories by using the popular app – MyFitnessPal. I setup my daily calorie target of 2,085 and then added in my macro targets – 170g of protein, 250g of carbs and 45g of fat.
Every night I add in my meals for the following day, scanning the foods in or searching for them via the app. It has really opened my eyes to how much fat and sugar is in some foods! Since using MyFitnessPal, I have managed to not only improve my diet, I have also been able to make healthier choices when it comes to the food I am putting into my body.
So far, I have managed to lose nearly 9lbs and the most important thing is that I have been able to maintain this approach. I am still able to enjoy the food I’m eating which is super important!
Running – Strava
I’ve always enjoyed running and getting back into the swing of things over the last few months has felt great! But in order to track my performance during each run I have been using an app called Strava.
I strap my iPhone to my hip and off I go! It’s great to have all of this data at my fingertips so I can understand if my pace is improving, how far I’m running and a lot more.
A few months back I was struggling to run 3km but now, with the help of my iPhone 12, I ran nearly 12km the other day and still had some left in the tank!
Daily Tracking – Apple’s Fitness App
Finally, I have been using the Fitness app from Apple to track my daily steps, how many hours I stand for during the day and how many minutes I am active for.
This allows me to try and hit my 10,000 step target each day and also ensure that I get up from my desk at least once per hour.
As you can see, my phone has played a crucial role in the journey to improve my health and I honestly think I’d be struggling a lot more without it!
