Is Vitamin D Supplementation Necessary?

Our bodies need vitamin D in order to perform essential functions, like absorbing calcium and phosphate. Without enough vitamin D, you can experience a wide range of symptoms and health issues, including osteomalacia and rickets.

Although vitamin D is essential for optimal health, it can be hard to acquire enough to of the vitamin. While there are some foods which naturally contain vitamin D, like fatty fish and tofu, humans tend to absorb a relatively small amount of the vitamin from food sources.

Instead, we’re reliant on the sun to provide us with enough vitamin D to stay healthy. Of course, in climates like the UK, the limited sunlight means that many people have low levels of vitamin D in their system. Furthermore, the necessary use of sunscreen means that we tend to absorb even lower amounts of vitamin D. This means that a significant percentage of the proportion having on-going vitamin D deficiencies.

As sunlight hours are reduced during the Autumn and Winter, deficiencies become increasingly common during this time of the year. As a result, people may be more aware of low vitamin D risks, such as fatigue, mood changes, bone pain and muscle weakness. With so many symptoms arising from low levels of vitamins D, it’s important to top up your levels when you need to.
